Joan Hickson was an English actress, best known for portraying the character of Miss Marple in the BBC television film series. She was born on August 5, 1906, in Kingsthorpe, United Kingdom.
Early Years and Career
After making her theatrical debut in 1927, Joan Hickson toured across Britain for some time. Her first major success came in the mid-1940s after her comedic roles in London's West End. She made her film debut in 1934 in the British comedy "Trouble at the Shop" and continued to have an active film career, mainly in comedic roles.
Agatha Christie and Miss Marple
In 1946, Joan Hickson caught the attention of Agatha Christie herself, who was watching a theater production of her own play, "Appointment with Death." The renowned writer wrote to Hickson, expressing her hope that she would one day play her beloved Miss Marple. Hickson encountered Christie's work again in 1961 when she portrayed Miss Kidd in the film "Murder, She Said," where Margaret Rutherford played Miss Marple.
The Later Years
Throughout the years, Joan Hickson continued to work in both film and theater. She appeared in numerous British films and achieved great success in 1979 when she won a Tony Award. In 1984, the BBC began airing television adaptations of Miss Marple's novels, and Hickson was chosen to play the lead role. She portrayed Miss Marple in all 12 screen adaptations of Agatha Christie's novels, with filming continuing until 1992.
