Former city councillor Druh Farrell has been nominated to become the NDP candidate in Calgary-Bow for next year’s provincial election.

Farrell served six terms on Calgary city council representing Ward 7 before choosing not to run for re-election in 2021.

In a release, Farrell said she and others are united behind NDP leader Rachel Notley as she attempts to regain her former position as premier of Alberta.

“I am confident that with this team, with Alberta’s NDP, and with a government led by Rachel Notley, we can help this community and this province thrive,” said Farrell in the release.

Krista Li, the then-president of the Calgary-Bow NDP association, stepped down after saying she and others in the group were blindsided by a weekend announcement that Farrell would be running for the nomination.

Li said Farrell was “hand-picked” and pushed through by the party, while others vying for the candidacy from within the association, including herself, had been ignored for months.

Under Alberta’s fixed election date laws, the next provincial election is set to take place on May 29, 2023, unless it is called earlier by the premier.
