Loh Boon Chye
With a career in the financial industry that spans three decades, Loh Boon Chye has played a key role in the development of Southeast Asia’s capital markets. One of the first tasks he engaged in upon assuming the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Singapore Exchange (SGX) in 2015 was to position the bourse operator as a gateway to Asia and to different asset classes. SGX had been facing poor investor confidence and limp trading volumes, and was in need of a nudge to turn things around. As a consequence, SGX has strengthened its multi-asset capabilities. It now boasts a raft of offerings ranging from equities to fixed income, currencies and commodities, and has made deeper inroads into the foreign exchange market. SGX has also expanded its global presence to 10 cities, started new businesses such as SGX Index Edge in 2015, as well as engaged in the strategic acquisitions of the Baltic Exchange in 2016 and Scientific Beta and BidFX in 2020.
At SGX’s 25th annual general meeting in October 2024, Loh told shareholders that the stock market “remains key” to the management’s strategy. “It is an important pillar of Singapore’s financial ecosystem. We’re hopeful that our cash equities business will improve when all quarters of the ecosystem rally together, to structurally improve liquidity and trading.”
As CEO, he drives SGX Group’s growth strategy, with the aim of transforming SGX Group into a world-class multi-asset exchange. He is also an executive and non-independent director on the SGX Board. Apart from his directorship on the SGX Board from 2003 to 2012, he also sits on the board of GIC Pte Ltd. He is chairman of the Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics Advisory Board and co-chair of the Council for Board Diversity. In 2023, he was elected as chairman of the World Federation of Exchanges.
Loh holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the National University of Singapore.
